What Are You Reading? October Linky.

I'm linking up with my blogging buddies over at Focused On Fifth for our new monthly linky, "What Are You Reading?"

I love to use picture books to initiate student writing. School Supplies: A Book of Poems is a book I use to teach figurative language. There are so many great poems in this book that illustrate personification.

The students search through the poems looking for examples of personification. They then pick their own school supply to write a poem about. It's a great first writing assignment. For a final draft you can have the students copy the poem on the shape of the school supply they write about. The poems can then be turned into a bulletin board display for Open House.

Our "What Are You Reading?" linky is designed to give 5th grade teachers a place to get new ideas while share books that you are reading. You can share novels, pictures books or professional development books.

Be sure to head back to Focused On Fifth and check out the books that others are sharing. We would also love to have you link up.
